Marketing mistakes

Along with the announcement for Classic WoW, there was also news of a 15th Anniversary Collectors Edition box set.

I was curious last night and looked to the shop to see what the full description was for the $99 Pre-Order. What I saw right off was that it was sold out. And that was a bit confusing to me.

A preorder is an order placed for an item that has not yet been released. … Preorders allow consumers to guarantee immediate shipment on release, manufacturers can gauge how much demand there will be and thus the size of initial production runs, and sellers can be assured of minimum sales.

So delivery isn’t until October, and there was no mention that it would be a limited release, so how can an item that was only revealed be sold out in hours. Surely they shouldn’t be sold out that quickly.

So I took a look at the General Forums.

Part way into the post was a reply to this being sold out from Kaivax

From the blog post:

“…check availability with your favorite video game retailer in the coming days to pre-order.”

So let me get this straight. Pre-orders from the Blizzard shop are sold out, but if I can find a video game retailer in the coming days I can pre-order through them? So is it sold out or not. @BlizzardCS had this to say.

All I have to think is that someone did not do enough planning for this roll out. Whether the marketing department dropped the ball, or someone rushed to get it announced with the Classic announcement is something we will never know.

Personal thought is they should have released it as a limited edition with limited sales at different times of the day to ensure that those interested in purchasing would have an opportunity. Right now the only people making more money than Blizzard off this are those that are selling their pre-order for an object they don’t even have in hand.

  1. What the hell…? I didn’t even get a mail from Blizzard about this!
Guess this is what I get for not having much time for social media for 5 days.

When I’m all too willing to throw money at companies, I think they should give me the chance 😛

      1. For some reason, Gamestop in Denmark seemed to still stock the pre-order… I’m curious to see if they actually still have more or if it’s just a mistake (seeing as no other countries’ Gamestops seemed to have it in stock).
Of course it’s far more expensive there than where I usually buy CEs, but I reasoned with myself that I could sell off those mounts I don’t care about, anyway… provided they don’t immediately add them to the in-game store after the release.
